It’s hard not to get a good pump and cause some muscle damage when you have a tough intense workout with a lot of tension on your muscles across a lot of difficult sets. So they’re probably less drivers and more like soreness, they happen along with the muscle growth. But in my interpretation they’re mostly concurrent byproducts of having done volume of tough sets and mechanical tension well. Muscle damage and metabolic stress may themselves directly contribute to building muscle. Push the intensity once you’ve nailed down the big basics while staying within what you can recover from. You need to bring intensity to your workouts to build muscle beyond that of your every day gym guy or girl. It falls a little for muscle growth but still matters. Training intensity moves higher on the list when we start talking about training for strength. So get your form right and ensure you build in enough recovery to avoid accumulating wear and tear. Meanwhile not getting hurt might be the most important long term factor in progress. Lockouts and rest between reps can allow greater overall tension and training volume. Not to be confused with “constant tension” which doesn’t matter. Within those tough sets, try to accumulate mechanical tension. Train close to your maximum recoverable volume(for more on this get into vast library of videos and articles on training volume). This doesn’t mean past failure on each set(this will accumulate fatigue faster than training effect) but coming within a rep or 2 of strict form failure on tour working sets and taking some past failure should drive great progress.
